Announcements:

  Help us celebrate Harmony’s 5^th graders on May 10th!  We will have a picnic lunch, play games, sign T-shirts, and have the annual Tug-of-War competition. We need all the help we can get setting up and organizing the events. If you would like to assist the day of the picnic, please sign up here http://signup.com/go/XxHFtMX
  
   
  
  On the day of the picnic, each child will need to bring a towel and a sack lunch. Please sign in at the front office and then meet us behind Harmony (locations where buses park) around 10 AM.  Kiddos will arrive around 11 AM.  Activities will continue until 2 PM.
  
    
  
   
  
  ELA Workshop:
  
  I can show how a character changed in Bull Run.

1. Students will select a character from the book Bull Run. They will analyze the character to show how their perspective changes and write a speech from the character’s point of view. Each student will deliver their speech to the class.
   
   I can complete a DRA assessment and MAP test.

1. Students will be completing a MAP Reading assessment this week as well as a DRA assessment. Both tests will show student’s growth throughout the year.
   
   I can draft my historical essay.

1. Students will be completing their historical essay about a significant person or event during the Civil War.

 

Math Workshop:

I can describe patterns within coordinate grids. I can generate a number pattern.

1. Students will be studying how number patterns can be plotted on a coordinate grid. We will have our mid-module assessment on Monday, May 7^th, we will be reviewing on Friday.
   
    
   
   Science:
   
   I can describe the effects of gravity.

• The students will be studying the force of gravity on all objects. Then they will be creating a parachute to soften the effects of gravity on an egg.

 

Social Studies:   

I can analyze the Gettysburg Address. I can name the founders of KY.  

1. The students will continue their learning on the Civil War. We will dig deeper into the Gettysburg Address and understand its importance during the Civil War. Next, we will focusing on our state’s history.

ELA Workshop:

I can analyze a character from Bull Run.

• Students will select a character from the book Bull Run, which focuses on varying perspectives from the first great battle of the Civil War. They will analyze the character to show how their perspective changes throughout the book.

I can draft an essay on a historical figure/event from the Civil War.

• Students will immerse themselves in Civil War literature, and select a historical figure or event to research. After gathering information, they will use that to compose an essay on their topic and its significance in the Civil War.

Math Workshop:

I can construct a coordinate system. I can plot & interpret points on a coordinate plane.

• Students will begin Module 6 by looking into coordinate planes, systems, and discuss how to plot points in one quadrant.

Science:

I can describe how the Earth’s systems interact.

• The students will describe interactions between the various systems of the Earth, and trace the movement of materials through all four of Earth’s spheres.

Social Studies:   

I can name the causes of the Civil War. I can describe the culture of the Civil War.

• The students will continue their learning on the Civil War. We will identify content-specific vocabulary (such as secession), and use this knowledge to identify the causes of the Civil War, as well as delve into what the culture during this 4 year period of strife.

ELA Workshop: 

I can build schema on the Civil War? 

• The students will begin to explore events that happened during the Civil War. They will then choose a figure or event to do further research so they can draft and essay. 

 

Math Workshop: 

I can classify 2-D figures? I can demonstrate what I have learned.  

• The students will classify 2-D figures based on their properties. 
• On Friday, the students will take an End of Module 5 Test 

 

Science: 

I can name and discuss ocean ecosystems? 

• The students will learn the ocean supports a variety of ecosystems and organisms, shapes landforms, and influences climate. 

 

Social Studies:   

I can identify the diverse people of the West.  

• The students will explore various groups that settled in the West. These will include the 49ers, Oregon Pioneers, Mexicanos, Mormons, Nez Perce, and Chinese Immigrants.  

 

I hope everybody had a relaxing Spring Break and are ready to finish this year off strong. 

Next week we are going to participate in 5^th Grade Day at North Oldham Middle School on April, 19th.  Students should be coming home with some paperwork from the middle school then so be on the lookout. 

Mother/Daughter book club meets tomorrow in the LMC from 6:00-7:00. 

 

This Week in 5^th grade!

Math:  I can define attribute of parallelograms. I can define attributes of rectangles, rhombuses, kites & squares. 

Students will understand that attributes belonging to a category of 2-D figures also belongs to subcategories of that category.  Students will analyze defining attributes and create a hierarchal classification of quadrilaterals. 

Science:  I can describe the ocean ecosystem.

Students will analyze the vast ocean ecosystem while discovering its influence on the weather all over the Earth and how it is responsible for generating 70% of our oxygen.

Social Studies: I can describe the impact of the Louisiana Purchase.  I can identify the diverse people of the west. 

Students will learn about Lewis & Clark Expedition and westward expansion.  Topics within the unit will include Manifest Destiny, Trail of Tears, Acquisition of Oregon Country, The Mexican Cession, and the different groups of people that moved westward. 

ELA: I can make inferences while reading a non-fiction text.  I can revise and edit my opinion paper. 

Students will read further about the Louisiana Purchase and Sacagawea in a non-fictional text format and produce responses to comprehension questions.
