3/21 – 3/25

Dear Families,

 

             There are several fun events coming up! First, your child has been practicing a performance that they will be presenting this Friday the 25^th at 8:15. I recently sent out an email regarding this event. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Huskypalooza is Saturday May 21^st, but you can already get a jumpstart and order your t-shirt. The class with the most t-shirt orders will receive a pretty stellar reward. If you order the $15 shirt you will receive FREE entry into Huskypalooza and avoid the long line. This coming week we will be doing some work with coins and money. On Monday please have your child bring in $3 - $5 in coins. Place their change in a baggy with their name on front. All change will return home on Wednesday. Thanks for your help with this!

Reader’s Workshop:

What are folktales? 

What are the characteristics of folktales? 

How does the region influence the folktale?

-          We will continue our sixth ELA unit, Hand Me Down Tales from Around the World.  In this unit we learn about the characteristics of a folktale (stories told long ago, setting not specific, sets of three, repeating phrases, good vs. evil, happy ending, and a theme). Students will read a variety of folktales to look for these characteristics.  We will focus on tales from continents each week. This past week we focused on tales from Asia, this coming week we will read tales from Central and South America. We will focus on identifying certain characteristics in tales based on the region they are from. The students will identify clothing, food, geography, and animals in each folktale.

 

Math Workshop:

How do I add money?

How do I order things using money?

How do I write money number stories?

-          Students will review sorting coins and finding different value of various coin combinations. They will practice adding the write amount of coins to make the correct amount to purchase something. They will also practice making change. This week will reinforce different adding and subtracting strategies we’ve learned and show them how adding and subtracting is used in the real world.

 

Science:

What type of water is best for plants?

Do plants need sunlight?

How can I create a shade structure for a new plant?

-          Students will continue their ongoing experiments to see if plants need sunlight and what type of water is best for plants. They will work in teams as “engineers” to plan and build a shade structure.

 

Writer’s Workshop:

How do I write letters about my opinion?

-          As we enter our sixth ELA unit, Hand Me down Tales from Around the World. Students will continue their work on narrative and opinion writing. This week students will learn how to write letters telling their opinion about favorite characters from books they’ve read.

 

Other Information:

-          Friday, March 25^th – Dance Assembly Day.  Our class will share the dance they learned in PE/ Music at 8:15 am in the gym.  You are invited to attend! 

-          Spring Break is April 4^th – 8^th.

-          Huskypalooza May 21^st

-          We are currently helping to collect old or unneeded eyeglasses for underprivileged people in Africa.  If you have any at home you wish to donate, we will gladly take them!  Thank you.

3/14 – 3/18

Dear Families,

             Our field trip to the Ali Center is this Thursday, March 17^th.  We will depart Harmony at 9:15 am and return around 1:30pm.  Your child will need to pack their lunch for the field trip.  Please pack their lunch in disposable bags so we do not have to worry about lunch boxes.  If you would like your child to purchase a sack lunch from the cafeteria for the field trip, please let me know by Tuesday so I can let the cafeteria know!  We are super excited for the field trip as it is a great learning experience and fun day.

Math Workshop:

How can I subtract by trading first? 

How can I solve word problems?

-          This week we will continue to work on subtraction problems that require trading.  Students are still learning that to solve many multi-digit subtraction problems, we must trade a ten for ones in order to get the correct answer.  We will also be solving a variety of word problems involving addition and subtraction and money and measurement. 

Science:

What type of water is best for plants?

Do plants need sunlight?

How can I create a shade structure for a new plant?

-          This week we will start a new unit of study in Science.  We will begin investigating the basic needs of plants through various experiments?

Writer’s Workshop:

How do I revise and publish my small moment story?

-          We will complete our transfer task for Unit 5, which will be writing our opinion about whether people should have wild animals as pets.

-          March 15^th – PTA Skate Party at 6pm at Champs.  Wear green!

-          March 16^th – Early Release Day.  Please be sure to send in notes for any transportation changes!

3/7 – 3/11

Dear Families,

 

             Thank you so much for helping your children work on their Civil Rights vest project!  We are really enjoying seeing everyone’s creativity and hearing them share about their person. 

We will watch the Disney Ruby Bridges movie with all second grade classes this Thursday and Friday afternoon.  If your child would like to bring in their own popcorn snack to eat during the movie on Friday, they can. 

A field trip form came home last Friday to attend the Ali Center on Thursday, March 17^th.  This field trip is an awesome culminating activity for our civil rights unit.  We greatly enjoyed the experience last year and are looking forward to sharing it with our current second graders.  Please return all field trip forms and fees by this coming Friday.  If you are interested in attending as a parent chaperone, please be sure to put a note on your child’s form.  We will have a drawing this Friday. 

Please continue to send in items for the Animal Society.  We would like a pet to visit us!

Reader’s Workshop:

What is fluency?  How should my voice sound when reading aloud?

-          This week we will be practicing our fluency.  Students will practice their expression and volume, phrasing, smoothness, accuracy, and rate or pace by reading aloud a variety of poems and reader’s theatre scripts.  Students will read alone, with partners, and as a group.  We will work together to create a fluency rubric so that we can self-assess and partner-assess.

-          We will wrap up our Civil Rights unit this week by learning about Cesar Chavez and Muhammad Ali.  We will share the remaining vest projects and watch the Disney Ruby Bridges movie. 

 

Writer’s Workshop:

How do I revise and publish my small moment story?

-          We will finish our story revisions and begin publishing our small moment stories this week.  Students will reflect on their writing to see if they accomplished the goal they set for themselves.  We will also look for one place in our story that we can be more descriptive.

-          March 8^th and 9^th – Kindergarten Registration

-          March 9^th – Progress reports go home.  Please return the white envelopes with a signature after you review your child’s progress.

-          March 10^th and 14^th – Spring Parent Teacher Conferences.
