A note from Mrs. Tabor

I hope that you all had a fun and restful October Break.  I know that we all need a little down time before the hustle and bustle of the holidays begins!

I hope that you all had a moment to read Ms. Hammons’ note forwarded to you regarding Pennies for Patients and Red Ribbon Week.  During Red Ribbon Week, we will discuss how important it is to live a healthy lifestyle. We will also wear something different each day, as a fun way to spring board our conversations regarding healthy living.  Collecting pennies for children with lymphoma and leukemia is something everyone can participate in, and feel good about helping someone in need.  I know that sometimes it feels that we are constantly asking for something from our parents, and trust me, I can sympathize!  However, I also know how important it is to all of us to teach our children compassion for others.  With that being said, toss what you have on top of the dryer, or in the couch cushions into a bag and help your child feel like a rock star!

On Thursday, we will take a break from Red Ribbon festivities, and celebrate what we’ve learned about Nursery rhymes and literary texts by dressing as our favorite Nursery rhyme or storybook character. Remember, any dress needs to be weather appropriate, comfortable, and “restroom friendly,” (i.e. students must be able to use the restroom independently in their costume).

 

A few Reminders ….

·         We need more shoe tiers in Kindergarten! Encourage your child to learn how to do it themselves! 

·         Now that the weather is beginning to change, remember to dress your child for the weather.  We will go out for recess if the temperature is above 32 degrees, and it’s dry on the playground.

 

 

Dates to Remember

Monday: Wear RED and Pennies for Patient: To kick off our week we are asking all students, faculty, and staff to show school pride by Wear RED. We also invite all students to bring in their change to help children fight cancer!

Tuesday:   For College, University, Trade School, and Military Day we are asking students to show pride for their future by wearing a favorite college, university, trade school, or military shirt.

Wednesday: Dress for Success Day and Pennies for Patients

Thursday: Reach for the Stars, be healthy, Pennies for Patients                                                                                                         Kinderpups will be celebrating the end of our unit on Nursery rhymes by dressing as our favorite nursery rhyme or story book character.

Friday: School Spirit; Mix it Up at lunch Day and Pennies for Patients and an assembly!
For School Spirit Day we are encouraging students, faculty, and staff to wear our school colors and pledge to be drug free for our futures!

 

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

We will complete our unit on Nursery rhymes and literary texts, and begin a new unit on retelling stories with a beginning, middle and an end.

 

Writing Workshop

Writers Write about What They Know We will all have great stories to tell from our experiences with October break and Halloween, so we will be writing about these events.

 

Handwriting

Handwriting instruction will focus on developing fine motor skills as well as the proper formation of the following letters: Aa, Ee, and Ii.

 

Word Study

This week, we will explore the letters Aa, Ee, and Ii.   Ask your child about the letter sound chants for both. We will also learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: all, can and said. Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

 

Math

We will begin a new unit, working with the numbers 1-30.  We will also compare numbers by using the terms, “greater than,” and, “less than.”

 

Social Studies

Halloween stories and crafts!

A note from Mrs. Tabor,

Please send in a small ball of any type by Wednesday for an activity in Writing.  Be sure it will easily fit in the backpack along with your students other items! 

 

For our field trip on Tuesday, we need everyone to bring their lunch.  We will eat at school before we leave.  Please be sure to wear your yellow class shirt! 

 

A few Reminders ….

*The Guided Reading Books that are being sent home are supposed to be easy for your students to read to you when they bring them home. Please be sure they are reading it twice each evening.  Encourage them to touch the word that they are saying when they are reading.  This will help their fluency and word recognition.

*Book Fair continues this week! If you would like your child to shop, please send in book fair money in a sealed envelope.  If you do not want your child purchasing pencils/posters/stickers, please mark, books only on the envelope!

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

This week we are learning about informational and literary text.  We will learn about the parts of informational text and how they help us as readers!   

 

Writing Workshop

This week we are working on adjectives and describing things.  We use small balls to describe to each other and sort.  This will help students continue to build their speaking and oral language skills!  Try to play I-spy when you are driving down the road or ask your students to describe something they see with more details! 

 

Handwriting

Handwriting instruction will focus on developing fine motor skills as well as the proper formation of the following letters: Vv, Xx, Yy, Zz

 

Word Study

This week, we will explore the letters Vv, Xx, Yy, Zz.   Ask your child about the letter sound chants for both. We will also learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: her, do, up. Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

 

Math

We will finish our unit on writing and sequencing numbers 1-20.  Students will complete a transfer task on Wednesday and Thursday showing they have an understanding of what the numbers look like, how to represent them, and the correct order!  Be sure you are practicing counting every day! 

 

Science

We will finish observing our corn plant’s growth and finish our unit on plants.

A note from Mrs. Tabor….

Dear Families,

 

We couldn’t have asked for a better first field trip!  The kids had such a wonderful time.  Thank you volunteers for helping out!  Ms. Theresa and I couldn’t have pulled it off without you. 

 

Wednesday is an Early Release Day.  Please make sure to send in all changes in transportation in writing.

 

This Friday is a big day: Our first Scholastic Book Fair, the Husky Hustle and the Harmony Harvest.

 

The Scholastic Book Fair gives students the ability to shop for great books at affordable prices.  We have signed up to shop as a class from 8:30 to 9 Friday morning.  However, the Book Fair will be available during the Harvest and through the 17^th.  Students can bring money the following week and shop after checking in to class in the morning.

 

This Friday is our Annual Husky Hustle from 1:25-2:10 pm.  Families are welcome to walk or run with us.  If you would like to come, please sign in the office and meet us in the gym.  Please dress your child for the weather and send in an extra water bottle with your child’s name on it for the Hustle.

 

Come back to school that evening from 6;00-8:00 for the Harmony Harvest.  It is a fun filled night with games, jumpies, and prizes.  Don’t forget about our class auction items.  If you are unable to make it to the Harvest, but would like to purchase a ticket to one of these events, just send me a note with payment in your child’s folder and I will put them on the list.  Here’s a sneak peak of our auction items:

Build a Lego city with   Mrs. Tabor   Do you like to build? Let's build a Lego City! This will need architects, engineers, and designers! I am looking for a crew to build a Lego city. Together we can work to design stores, parks, playgrounds, and houses. We will make cars, roads, and schools. We will make everything we need to make our city look like a real city! If you are interested, bring your imagination and come build, build, build with Mrs. Tabor!   The more architects we have the bigger and better our city will be! All grade levels are welcome. Sign up below for just $15 per child and join us on Tuesday, November 12th from 2:30-4:00pm. A small snack and drink will be provided. Everyone’s a winner!           Spa Day with Mrs. Tabor   Do you like to be pampered like a princess? Let Mrs. Tabor treat you to a spa day. Salon services include a pretty manicure, stylish hair style (with ribbons and bows if desired), and make-up.       The more princesses that join the better! Sign up for just $15 per child (checks payable to Harmony PTA) and join us on Tuesday, January 14th from 2:30-4:00pm. A snack and drink will be provided.

 

Mrs. Tabor’s Pretend Sleepover Wear your pajamas; bring a pillow and your favorite stuffed animal friend to school for a sleepover that is pretend!   Join us in a night filled with good treats to eat, games to play, and watch a movie on the big screen!  Wear your pajamas; bring your pillow, stuffed animal, and sleeping bag.     Students can be dropped off at 6:00 pm and picked up at 9:00pm on Friday, December 13th, 2013 at school.  Mom and Dad can go do some holiday shopping without the kids!  We will be having our sleepover the same night as Mrs. Horn, Mrs. Haselton and Ms. Poteet.    The fee will be $25 and all students are welcome to attend.

 

Kinderpup Family Movie Night   Friday, February 7th, bring your family to watch a fun movie in the gym with other Kinderpup families.  Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket to sit on, and we’ll provide the movie and popcorn!   Doors open at 6:30 for dinner, and the movie will begin at 7:00.   The cost is $10 per family.

 

Reminders ….

*Putting on jackets and zipping independently is an important skill to have as the temperatures dip.  They are always so proud when they can do it themselves and help others. 

*Be sure to be reading at least 10 minutes a night and record your book titles!

This week we will learn how to continue to speak and listen to each other as we form opinions and write about them.  Speaking and listening are both very important language and social skills.  They sure do enjoy sharing their opinions and explaining why they have a particular opinion.

Handwriting instruction will focus on developing fine motor skills as well as the proper formation of the following letters: Jj, Ww, and Qq

 

Word Study

This week, we will explore the letters Jj, Ww, and Qq. Ask your child about the letter sound chants for both. We will also learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: they, be, have. Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

 

Math

We will practice writing and sequencing numbers 1-20.     

 

Science

We will continue observing our corn plant’s growth and learn about the parts of a corn plant and how each part of the plant works together.
