What are we learning?

Math- How do I demonstrate adding and subtracting fractions?

 Test review on Monday and Tuesday.  We will spend time going over the comparing and ordering of fractions, mixed numbers, adding and subtracting fractions, and fractions on a line plot.  Math test on Wednesday and then we will review our results.

Science- What do I know about food webs?

We will continue to look at ecosystems and food webs.  Students will take part in an On Demand.

 

Social Studies- What are the three branches of the government?

We are going to examine the different roles each branch of government holds and their responsibilities.  Students will also participate in I-Civics which is an interactive computer program that promotes civics education and encourage our students to become active citizens.

ELA/ Writing & Reading- What is the purpose of the Constitution? What are the first three articles of the Constitution about? What are Checks and Balances?

Students will also read about and discuss why we added the Bill of Rights and what rights they guaranteed to the citizens of our country.

Group B has PE until Wednesday. Group A will begin PE on Thursday.

MAP testing continues – Reading will be given this week on Wednesday.

Wednesday, February 1 – Math test on adding / subtracting fractions and interpreting line plots.

Battle of the Books continues – encourage your child to continue to read!

 

What are we learning?

Math – How do I add and subtract mixed numbers? How do I interpret and create line plots?

·         Students will be building upon previous skills to answer fraction sums and differences in simplest terms. Additionally, they will borrow from the whole number in order to subtract mixed numbers.

·         Students will use fractions as part of their line plots when they collect and interpret data.

 

Science – How is energy transferred in a system?  

·         Students will create food chains and food web for various ecosystems.

 

Social Studies – What forms of government existed before the Constitution?

·         Students will review previous documents used by governments and will begin to make meaning of the Preamble to the Constitution.

 

ELA Writing / Reading – How do I build stamina as a writer? How do I determine importance and summarize text?

·         Students will be completing MAP Reading Assessment.

·         Students will be working on organization / conventions in writing and will use their own reading and historical documents to find the theme, summarize text, and determine importance.

Dear Parents,

All students will participate in MAP testing over the next two weeks.  Students will be testing in math this week and in reading the following week.  Students will review their goals from the fall testing window. 

There will be a Social Studies test covering the causes of the American Revolution on Thursday, January 19^th. 

Related Arts: On Thursday, January 19^th, Group B will begin their P.E. rotation.  Please make sure your student wears the correct shoes. 

This week:

Math Workshop

How do I add and subtract fractions?  Students will learn and apply strategies for adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. 

Social Studies

How do I apply my knowledge of the causes of the American Revolution?  Students will have a test on the causes of the American Revolution on Wednesday.

What were the strategies of the British and Continental armies?  Students will analyze the differences in the armies and study the strategies of both armies.  Students will also determine the factors that led to a victory for the Continental Army. 

ELA Workshop

How do I draft a feature article?  Students will continue to work on their Renaissance feature articles.  Students will also participate in peer editing. 

How do I compare and contrast the theme of texts?  Students will analyze multiple texts with similar themes and compare and contrast how the authors were able to convey the theme in the differing forms of writing (article, play, poem, narrative).  Students will also apply their skills of quoting accurately from a text to defend their thinking.

Dear Parents,

 

Please remember to make sure that your children are dressed appropriately for the weather, as we will go outside for recess as often as we can.  As a general rule, we will go outside if it is above 30⁰ with the wind chill, and the playground area is not treacherous.  

If you haven’t signed up for weather alerts and snow closings from WDRB or one of the other local stations, you may want to do that now, as that seems to be the fastest way to find weather delays or snow day closings.  If you have any questions about our snow day policies, please refer to the Oldham County web site.

What will we be learning?

Math Workshop

We will be comparing and ordering mixed and improper fractions.   We will also discuss and determine the least common multiple (LCM) for mixed and improper fractions.

Social Studies

We are going to continue to learn about the causes for the Revolutionary War.  We will also discover the roles of the Loyalist, Patriots, and Neutralists.  The class will evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of declaring Independence and interpret the Declaration of Independence. 

ELA Workshop

Students will continue to build on their influential character of the Renaissance Period by researching one of the artists, inventors, or leaders during the Renaissance period. 

They will be reading texts about how the French and Indian War set the stage for the Revolution and also about Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence.

 

Science

How does energy transfer from the sun to other organisms?  We will discuss how plants get their energy and what they need in order to survive.  We will evaluate how we can provide food in overpopulated areas that have no good soil.

I hope that you all had a wonderful break, with a chance to refuel and regroup during the past two weeks.  I think we all needed it!

This week’s homework: 

·         Wednesday: send in a favorite packaged food item from home with the ingredients listed.

·         Wednesday: each student needs to bring in some information about a Renaissance artist, inventor or leader (other than Michelangelo) for a research project.  Some ideas for research are DaVinci, Rafael, Donatello and the de Medici family.

·         Complete your current BOB book that you are reading with your literacy circle.

What will we be learning?
Math Workshop

What are equivalent fractions, how do I simplify fractions, how do I turn an improper fraction into a mixed number? Some of this will be a review from fourth grade math.  We will use this week to prepare for adding and subtracting fractions, coming next week.

 

Social Studies

What were the causes for the Revolutionary War?

·         Students will learn about the French and Indian War, The Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party and the Intolerable Acts.

 

ELA Workshop

Who were the influential characters of the Renaissance Period?

·         Students will conduct a research project on one of the artists, inventors or leaders during the Renaissance period.

How do I participate in a literature circle?

·         Students are reading a BOB book and meeting in small groups to discuss the book.

·         They are in charge of one of the following: characters, scene, plot, or vocabulary (roles rotate)

·         Additionally, they share a one page reflection that they have written.
