This Week:

Math- How do I calculate area and perimeter? Students will be finding the area and perimeter of rectangles and compound rectangles with fractional side measurements.  What is scale?  Students will explore a variety of multiplication situations in which they resize one of the factors and consider what happens to the size of the product.  How do I interpret word problems? Students will practice interpreting between multiplication and division word problems with fractions.  

Social Studies- What are the levels of government? Students will be learning about state and local governments and how the three levels of government work together.  Students will learn how taxes are used at each level.  Students will also be learning about what it means to be a responsible citizen.  

Science- How do Earth’s spheres interact? Students will begin analyzing the Cascade Mountains and figure out why the western side and eastern side are so different (clouds not being able to make it past the mountains so the eastern side is barren).  Students will then research real-life examples of Earth’s spheres interacting.  

ELA- How do I summarize a written text?  Students will continue summarizing and analyzing The Little Prince by Antoine St. Exupery.  How do I actively participate in a literacy circle? Students will continue reading and discussing a novel with their peers.

-Battle of the Books class/school rounds will be completed during the week of February 27-March 3.
 
 - We will have our Social Studies test covering government on Thursday, February 17^th. A study guide will be sent home on Wednesday.
 
-1^st Grade is completing their service project this week. They are collecting items for the Animal Care Society. Please send in items by Friday.

What are we learning?
Math Workshop
How do I divide whole numbers by a unit fraction? How do I solve division and multiplication of fractions word problems?
Students will be focusing on how to divide fractions by whole numbers. ( 3 ÷1/3 = 9 and 1/3 ÷ 4 = 1/12) They will be learning how division and multiplication are related and how multiplication can be used to solve division problems. Students will also be focusing on analyzing word problems with division and multiplication of fractions.
 
Science
How do you determine the correct ecosystems for ocean animals?
Students will look into the different ecosystems that exist in the ocean. Students will categorize different animals into their respective ecosystems based on the animals’ characteristics.
 
 Social Studies
How do I apply my knowledge about the Constitution?
Students are finishing their study of our government and the Constitution. Students will be taking a test covering the topics on Thursday.
 
ELA/ Writing & Reading
How do I summarize a text? How do chapters provide structure for a writing piece?
Students will be practicing summarizing a text while participating in literature circles. Each student will be reading a chapter book with a group of students, completing a summary of their reading and answering comprehension questions.

What are we learning?

Math- How do I multiply fractions? This week, we will learn how to multiply fractions with fractions, multiply fractions with whole numbers, and how to multiply fractions with mixed numbers.

Science- What do I know about the four spheres?  Students will create dioramas that represent the interaction between biospheres (living things), hydrospheres (water), atmospheres and geospheres (earth). 

Social Studies- What are checks and balances? What are the first ten amendments in the Bill of Rights?  This week, we will discuss how our government employs a system of checks and balances to ensure that the three branches work together.  We will also learn about the first ten amendments to the Bill of Rights: Freedom of Speech, Press, Religion and Petition; Right to keep and bear arms; Conditions for quarters of soldiers; Right of search and seizure regulated; Provisions concerning prosecution; Right to a speedy trial, witnesses, etc.; Right to a trial by jury; Excessive bail, cruel punishment; Rule of construction of Constitution; and Rights of the States under Constitution.

ELA/ Writing & Reading- What is Dadaism? What is Surrealism? How do the chapters, scenes, or stanzas provide overall structure in literature? This week, we will explore the connection between Dadaism and Surrealism with literature.  We will use poems written by Lewis Carroll examine literary devices.
