Math

What is customary measurement?

Students will utilize the U.S. system of measurements by identifying length in inches, feet, yards, and miles; capacity in cups, pints, quarts, and gallons; weight in ounces, pounds, and tons.  We will also convert customary measurements.

 

Science

What is gravity?

We are going to be covering gravity this week and discussing strategies/designs for our egg drop.  Students will develop a device that will dropped from an exterior upstairs location and land on the ground without cracking their egg.

 

Social Studies

Who were the founders of Kentucky?

Students will learn about the importance of Boone’s expedition while also discovering the physical features and regions of our state. 

 

ELA

For reading we will continue to dissect how characters change over time by analyzing the ten Bull Run characters.  For writing we are going to introduce the historical fiction rubrics and begin brainstorming how we can assume a role that took place in that era.

We will be MAP testing throughout this week and next.

Diagnostic Reading Assessments (DRA) will be administered this week as well.

There is also another advance placement test for middle school that takes place at the middle school on Thursday, April 27^th.  We will administer the advanced Math test during school at Harmony at a later date.

Welcome back from Spring Break! I noticed that everyone seemed well-rested this morning, as well as healthier (knock on wood!).

THANK YOU!! You helped Harmony pass our $10,000 goal for Pennies for Patients.  It was really impressive to see how important this fundraiser was for our kids.  Pat yourself on the back for growing compassionate and generous children!

Our trip to Biztown was a HUGE success.  I believe that they all came away with an appreciation for how challenging the “real world” can be.  One child was heard saying, “Now I know why my parents are so tired at the end of the day!”  If you haven’t had a chance to talk about their experience, please ask them about it.

Field trip forms for our trip to North Oldham Middle School went home today. There is a free field trip, so please return the forms quickly.  Our visit on the 18^th will be followed with a fifth grade picnic back at Harmony.  It would be helpful to send your child with a sack lunch that day.

This week:

Math- What is volume?  What is capacity? How do I determine the volume of complex prisms? Students will learn how to determine the volume of 3-dimentional shapes, and learn how to use this formula in real world situations.

Social Studies- What caused the Civil War?   This week, we will discuss the causes for the Civil War, including the economy, states’ rights, slavery, The Missouri Compromise, and Bloody Kansas. 

Science- how do constellations appear differently throughout a year? Students will be learning about stars, and creating a model of earth’s closest stars.

ELA- How do I prepare for writing a historical non-fiction essay?  Students will read and take notes on important figures and events surrounding the Civil War.  Using these notes, students will write a research essay about an event from the Civil War, highlighting the causes and effects of the conflict.
