Families,

This is week is Harmony’s last week of collecting donations for Pennies for Patients.  We are having themed days to help raise the money to reach our school goal.  Students are encouraged to bring in 50 cents to participate each day.

                Tuesday: Pajama Day

                Wednesday: Dress Like Your Principal

                Thursday: Super Hero Day

                Friday: Donate $1 to turn Ms. Hackmiller into a hotdog

We will be going to Biztown this Thursday.  Please make sure your students bring a sack lunch.

This week:

Math- How do I apply my knowledge of coordinate planes and polygons? Students will be completing a study guide in class on Monday and taking the test on Tuesday.  Students will spend the remainder of the week looking at their goals for math and revisiting skills that need to be strengthened (i.e. order of operations, decimal place value, and operations with decimals and fractions)

Social Studies- Who were the diverse people of the West?   Students will be learning about the many groups of people who were impacted as a result of Westward Expansion.  How do I reflect on my BizTown experience? Students will reflect and self-assess on what contributed to the success of their business.

Science- How do I plan a garden? Students will continue planning a garden based on flowers that grow best in shade, sunlight, and a mixture of both.  Students will be applying their knowledge of Earth’s rotation to overcome the challenge of keeping certain flowers in shade for the majority of the day.

ELA- How do I improve my reading comprehension? Students will continue analyzing text structure to help better understand non-fiction.  What are the elements of poetry?  Students will apply the elements of poetry and go through the writing process to create an original work.  Students will present them to their classmates and First Grade Buddies on Friday.

Hello Families,

We are still fundraising for Pennies for Patients, we are working towards our classroom goal of $400. (We have already raised almost $300!!) The class with the greatest donation will earn an Olive Garden dinner.  We will be charting our donations as they come in to school this week. 

We enjoyed seeing you during our student-led conferences last week. We know that your student enjoyed showing you all of their learning.

Please return your Biz Town field trip form school ASAP.  We still are in need of a few chaperones.

What we’re doing!

Math

What are quadrilaterals? What is the hierarchy of quadrilaterals?

This week, we will be learning about the different properties of quadrilaterals. Students are expected to know the attributes of each shape and how the shapes relate to one another.

Social Studies

What was the impact of the Louisiana Purchase? What is Manifest Destiny?

This week, we finished up our study on Economics. We will begin studying the exploration of the western United States. Students will be learning about how America acquired the land and notable explorers.

ELA

This week, students are focusing on non-fiction text structures and then themes of poetry. Students will be analyzing the different types of text and identifying the text structure. We will also be discussing the author’s purpose for using each structure. Then we will review finding theme of a poem. Students will be examining a poem for the central message or moral.

For writing, students will practice writing on-demand questions from passages.  Students will discuss strategies on how to create a thesis statement by utilizing the information given from the passage.  We will also decide how to address the body paragraphs of our writing by expanding on our own ideas. 

Hello Families,

Also important this week are the student-led conferences.  Please be prompt, as our conferences are back to back.  If you have asked for your child to conduct their conference at home, your child will bring home their binders on Thursday.  Your child will be instructed to lead their conference the same way that they would lead it in the classroom, so please set aside about twenty minutes, uninterrupted, to look through the leadership binder with your child.  We will continue to add to our binders, so return the binders to school.

Please return your Biz Town field trip form school ASAP.  We will have room for two parents per class on the buses, so we will randomly draw names from the parents who have offered to chaperone on March 20th.  If your name is not drawn, you are welcome to drive separately and join us at Biztown. We’ll send out more specifics closer to the day of the field trip.

Good luck to our fifth grade Battle of the Books team! We have two members of the team in our class, and we are very proud of them!

Math

This week, we will move from understanding the function of graphs to learning about geometry.  In particular, we will learn about the different types of triangles, and identifying a variety of polygons.

Social Studies

How do I prepare for my Biztown Business?

We will continue to work on our businesses, and we will learn vocabulary specific to economics.

ELA

-Reading groups will continue with their Lit Circles.  For writing students will practice writing from prompts.  Students will discuss strategies on how to create a thesis statement by utilizing the information given from the prompt.  We will also decide how to address the body paragraphs of our writing by expanding on our own ideas. 

We will also take time to prepare for our student-led conferences, making sure that our presentations are polished!

-Students will analyze ordered pairs in quadrant one and be able to identify the origin, Y-axis and X-axis.

Social Studies

How do I prepare for my Biztown Business?

-Students will receive their job assignments that they applied to work for while at Biztown on March 30^th.  Everybody will get a business envelope and are expected to manage business cost sheets, loan applications, and various ads.  Students will also receive their checkbooks.
