A note from Mrs. Tabor….

Thank you all for taking the time to meet with me to discuss your child.  I look forward to this time every year.   Your children have learned so much in these first few months; it’s remarkable to watch how quickly they grow.

 

We have been working so hard on preparing for our Thanksgiving play.  Don’t forget to dress your child in the appropriate clothing for his/her role tomorrow.

 

We will begin our letters to Santa after Thanksgiving.  Please be sure to save any toy flyers or ads and send them in so we can use them when creating our letters! 

 

Next week, we have our field trip to see Nutcracker in a Nutshell at the Louisville Palace.   For this field trip, we ask that the children dress up.  Boys should wear dress pants (no jeans), and a nice shirt.  Girls are welcome to wear dresses or a cute outfit (again, no jeans). 

 

Reminders ….

-         Kindergarten is a time to learn independence. Please be encouraging your student to do things on their own at home!  Once you see them do something on their own, have them continue to do it on their own to build their confidence!

-         As the Holiday Season is quickly approaching, please make sure you continue reading with your child every night.

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

We will finish our unit on retelling, beginning, middle and end and problem and solutions this week and wrap it up with a transfer task! Students will be asked to retell a story we have read in class identifying the beginning, middle and end!

 

Writing Workshop

We will continue working on our books, “A day in the life of…..” to practice writing a complete story, including the beginning, middle and end. 

 

Word Study

This week, we will continue to explore the word families: -ad, -ag, -ap.  Ask your child about the phonics chants for all. We will also continue to learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: no, like, out.  Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

 

Math

We will finish our unit on 2-D and 3-D shapes.  Students will learn about 3-D shapes and their attributes.   We will also learn directional words like, over, under, beside, above, etc.  during this unit.  We will finish this unit this week and wrap it up with a transfer task!  

 

Social Studies

We will discuss the pilgrims and the Mayflower

A note from Mrs. Tabor….

We have been working so hard on preparing for our Thanksgiving play.  Be sure to invite your family, grandparents and anyone else who would like to come. Please be sure to send in your reservation for lunch if you plan on staying that day afterwards so the cafeteria has enough room! 

 

For Math this week we are asking you send in a few things for the students to use! 

1.    By Tuesday please send in a shoe box of 3-D objects from your house.  We are focusing on spheres, cubes, cones and cylinders. 

2.    By Wednesday please send in a SMALL toy, like an action figure, car, plastic figurine, etc.  We will be using these to practice directional words!

We will continue to study the Native Americans food, clothing and homes.  We will compare the Eastern Woodland Indians with the Pacific Northwest Native Americans and discuss what was the same and different.  Students will be making their vest and headdresses as well!

A note from Mrs. Tabor….

 

Wow!  Time is flying by quickly!  Tuesday will be the 60^th day of school.  All of the students have made so much progress!  I cannot wait to share your child’s progress at our Parent-Teacher Conference.  If you haven’t signed up for a conference yet, please contact me!  I would be happy to work around your schedule!  Also, just as a reminder Kindergarten Progress Reports will not come on Wednesday like the upper grades.  You will receive your child’s progress report at your conference. 

 

Don’t forget to send in a white or beige plain pillow slip by Tuesday.  As you may have heard, we are working on our Thanksgiving play.  In past years, we have made Native American vests out of paper grocery bags, but they are a bit clumsy to wear.  This year, we would like to use pillow slips.  If you have more than one pillow slip that you are willing to part with, we would appreciate you sending those as well.  Thanks so much in advance for sending in these supplies!

 

Wednesday is an Early Release Day.  Please make sure to send in all changes in transportation in writing.

A note from Mrs. Tabor

Conference time is around the corner!  During our conference I will be able to thoroughly go over your child’s progress report and explain how they are performing and being assessed. As a school policy, kindergarteners do not bring home their first progress report like the older students.  We will go over it together in the conference, as well as look at work samples and discuss goals. 

This week we will begin practice for our annual Thanksgiving play.  This is such a special tradition!  Students are learning about Thanksgiving, special songs, how to use props and are having a terrific time preparing to perform for you.  They will pick roles and perform for the whole family to enjoy on Tuesday, November 26^th at 11:15.  You are invited to stay for lunch after the play. 

We have had to change our daily schedule to access the gym for our practice. Our class now eats lunch in the classroom from 10:50-11:20. Our classroom will be a little crowded, so we will resume lunch dates after Thanksgiving.  Thanks for understanding!

 

There is a letter coming home today about our upcoming field trip to The Louisville Palace to see “The Nutcracker in a Nutshell”. 

A few Reminders ….

·         We need more shoe tiers in Kindergarten! Encourage your child to learn how to do it themselves! 

·         Now that the weather is beginning to change, remember to dress your child for the weather.  We will go out for recess if the temperature is above 32 degrees, and it’s dry on the playground.

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

We will learn more about retelling stories, including the beginning, middle and end.  We will also learn how to identify the problem and solution. 

 

Writing Workshop

Writers Write about What They Know We will extend our retelling into writing and learn how to write a complete story, including the beginning, middle and end. 

 

Handwriting

Handwriting instruction will focus on developing fine motor skills as well as the proper formation of the following letters: Oo and Uu.

 

Word Study

This week, we will explore the letters Oo and Uu.   Ask your child about the letter sound chants for both. We will also learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: so, an, and him. Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

 

Math

We will learn how to identify attributes, and how to sort objects into categories by a particular attribute.  We will also count and compare the number of items in a group. 

 

Social Studies
