A note from Mrs. Tabor…

Thank you so much for sending your kiddos in sneakers every day, and for sending in water bottles.  The children have enjoyed getting away from the building, and getting some fresh air and exercise on the track. We will continue to do this each morning throughout testing.   We will not be able to have lunch visitors until June 4^th due to make up days, as they have had many students out sick, and need the building to be quiet and distraction free.  Thank you for understanding.   

 

As you know, we will go to the zoo on Tuesday, June 3^rd.  Each student needs to:

• Wear weather appropriate clothing (don’t forget to wear your class T-shirt)!  Also, please wear tennis shoes, and hats or sunglasses are acceptable.
• Apply sunscreen before school.
• Pack a snack, a disposable water bottle, and sack lunch. A disposable camera will be allowed.
• NO MONEY.  To be fair to everyone, we (teachers, chaperones, and students) will not make any purchases on this trip.

Information for chaperones:

• Meet inside the front gates by the floating globe (go right upon entering through the gates-near the restroom entrance) no later than 10:00am to get your child/group and as well as an itinerary.  
• Please bring a backpack to carry children’s lunches and water bottles. 
• You may not make any purchases for any students (including your own) or allow them to spend any money.  This includes food, rides, gifts, etc.
• Meet us back at the meeting spot (where we met in the morning) promptly at 1:00. We have to be loaded on the buses by 1:15pm.
• Please bring your cell phone.  This is a safety measure that will allow us to have access to every student since we will be touring the zoo in small groups. 

On June 4^th at 8:00 am, our class will sing for Mr. Tilley’s 5^th grade recognition.Only the families of the fifth graders are invited.Because we are singing in front of an audience, please have your child wear something nice that day (nothing fancy, though, as we will still go outside to play later that day).If you are interested in having your child practice at home, here’s the link on You Tube: http://youtu.be/VbKEYYr0XRI.It’s a song from Sesame Street with Will.I.am called, “What I am.” I think you’ll enjoy hearing your child sing it!

Your are invited, however, on June 4th at 11:00 am, to our class' End of the Year Celebration. We will discuss our summer learning program, and we will give awards to our students. At the end, we will hand out our scrapbooks and watch a slideshow of the year.

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

We are doing free choice reading and sharing our opinions about books we prefer and describing what we like about them. 

 

Writing Workshop

We will finish up our reports about animals and present those to one another. 

 

Word Study

This week we will learn about the word families: -oke, -ope. Our word wall words for this week are: not, first, give. 

 

Math

We will review various units and mathematical concepts from throughout the year. 

 

Science/ Social Studies

We are working on our animals research in group and finishing up our reports.

A note from Mrs. Tabor…

BON VOYAGE!! Our chicks have all gone to the farm.  We had so much fun with them, but they grow quickly and they needed more space.  We certainly have had a great time with all of our animals.  The butterflies are the last for us to explore, and they should hatch in a week or so.  Please be sure to check out the website for updated pictures! 

Thanks to all of our volunteers throughout the year.  You have certainly made a huge impact on the progress that our children have had this year.   Even though our reading groups with volunteers is finished for the year, reading instruction is not finished.  We will continue to meet with your children individually and in small groups through the last week of school.

Wednesday, our school begins testing for third, fourth, and fifth graders.  NO VOLUNTEERS OR VISITORS ARE ALLOWED IN THE BUILDING DURING THIS TIME (see dates below).  This includes lunch time visitors.  We will continue instruction in our classrooms, but we will have less time in our special area classes, as our special area teachers are needed to help with testing.  Therefore, we will be walking up to the High School track for outdoor gross motor breaks.  PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IN TENNIS SHOES.  Students may take a water bottle with them, so please remember to send a labeled water bottle.

Also, please remember to dress appropriately for going outside!  No crocs, flip flops or dress shoes on the playground for safety reasons! It is getting hot, so please be sure to send in a water bottle each day!

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

We are continuing our unit, Wonders of Nature: Plants, Bugs, and Frogs.  We will continue to identify similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic. 

 

Writing Workshop

We are writing our animal book report! Ask your child what they have learned about their animal. 

 

Word Study

This week we will learn about the word families: -ine, -ide, -ice. Our word wall words for this week are: again, got, right 

 

Math

We will practice making and reading graphs!

 

Science/ Social Studies

We are continue our Animals Two-by-Two unit.  We will learn about their needs, characteristics, and behaviors.  This week, we will focus on butterflies.

A note from Mrs. Tabor…

It is an exciting time in our class! We have 10 chicks that have hatched, guppies, isopods, earthworms and snails that we are going to be observing and learning about the last few weeks of school!! Please be sure to check out the website for updated pictures!

Our last day for reading groups is May 16^th!  We will collect all books and the folder will no longer be coming home.

Newsletter 5/5/14

 

A note from Mrs. Tabor…

Thanks so much for sending in all of the supplies to make our Derby floats and hats!  They turned out so great!  The kids had such a blast decorating their floats and hat.  They especially enjoyed showing off their work to all of the other classes. 

Don’t forget to send in the shapes you find on your Shape Hunt in the bag sent home by Tuesday.  You don’t need to send in an item for each shape, just send in a many can fit in the bag. 

On Friday, we are going to celebrate Relay for Life.  Please have your child wear purple!  If you pre-ordered items from the HELP Project, they should be coming home this week.

Our chicks are supposed to hatch this week!!!  Cross your fingers that everything goes okay!  I am sure your child will tell you all about when they get home!

On a sad note, today is the last day of Technology for the rest of the year.  Time sure does fly by fast.  It seems like only a few weeks ago, the Kinderpups were just walking into Harmony with their shiny new backpacks, eyes full of nervous-excitement, and quiet whispers.  They have grown so much!

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

We are continuing our unit, Wonders of Nature: Plants, Bugs, and Frogs.  We will continue to identify similarities and differences between two texts on the same topic. 

 

Writing Workshop

Writers revise!  This week we are going to pull out one of our writing pieces from the beginning of the year.  We will revise the piece.  The kids are going to be shocked with how much they have grown as writers!  I cannot wait to see their reactions!

 

Word Study

This week we will learn about the word families: -ank, -ink, -unk. Our word wall words for this week are: new, am, much. 

 

Math

We will revisit Geometry, and focus on 3D shapes and positional words (ie, the cube is behind the sphere, or under the cylinder).  These vocabulary concepts are tricky for kindergarteners.  We will explore putting 2 & 3D shapes together in centers and on the computer. 

 

Science/ Social Studies

We are continue our Animals Two-by-Two unit and will learn about chicken.  We will learn about their needs, characteristics, and behaviors.
