Social Studies: How can I represent the Bill of Rights?  What does a responsible citizen look like?  What are the levels of government?

A U.S. citizen should be a knowledgeable and contributing member of society. We want to increase student knowledge and understanding about the concepts, roles, responsibilities, and rights that align with U.S. citizenship through voting and service learning. Students will develop a clear understanding of how to become a responsible citizen through activities that are meaningful, hands-on, inquiry based, and applicable to life.

Math:  How do I divide decimal dividends by non-decimal divisors?  How do I evaluate expressions using fraction division? 

Students will look at numerical expression involving fraction by fraction multiplication and interpret them.  Students will also create and solve word problems involving multiplication and division of fractions and decimals.

ELA: How do I participate in a Literature Circle?  How do I complete a passage based On-Demand?

Students will continue to read their novels and work alongside one another to fill their individual roles within their literature group.  Students will also continue to develop and implement new strategies to help prepare and execute an On-Demand writing sample.

Science:  How is energy transferred? Students will design an ecosystem using what they have learned about the transfer of energy.

Math Workshop:  How do I use resizing to compare measurements? How do I divide whole units by a fraction? How do I divide fractions by a unit fraction?

·          Students will use their fraction reasoning to determine the size of an equation without computing. Students will also compare problems like 24 ÷ to  ÷ 24

Science:   What is the source of all energy? What are ecosystems? After reviewing how ecosystems derive their energy, students will create their own ecosystems.  This Project-based Learning gets students to design a 

Landscaping plan that will attract insects, plants, and animal wildlife, but 

discourage invasive species that will unbalance the ecosystem.

Social Studies:  What is the legislative branch? What is the executive branch? What is the judicial branch? What are checks and balances? What is the Bill of Rights?

·         Because of the snow days, we will continue to use resources to discover the three branches of our government system. Students will determine the members of each branch and their respective roles. Students will also be engaging in interactive games about the branches.  We will also learn how checks and balances keep each of the branches from gaining too much power.  We will also learn the first ten amendments in the Bill of Rights.

E.L.A. Workshop:  How edit, revise, and publish my essay? What are non-fiction text structures? What is a “Passage-based on-demand”?   

·         Students will continue to put the final touches on their informative essays about a person from the Revolutionary War. Students will be peer-editing their piece and making revisions before typing their final draft. Students are also reading non-fiction texts to determine their text structure.  Students will learn the strategies needed to help them navigate writing an on-demand after reading a passage.

      Reading: How do I participate in a BoB competition? How do I participate in a literature circle?  Mrs. Clark will conduct a Battle of the Books within each class.  On Friday, the winning team from each class will battle for the Harmony fifth grade winning class!

Math Workshop: How do I convert measurements to use in word problems? How do I use resizing to compare measurements?

·         Students will use their knowledge of fraction operations to explore questions that involve converting measurements. (1/2 yd = ___ inches). Students will also using their fraction reasoning to determine the size of an equation without computing.

·         Students have been researching about plant life in the Arctic. They are in small groups and are engineering a plant that will survive in the Arctic’s conditions. Students will be finalizing their plant this week and presenting it to the class.

• Being proactive - BizTown Field is Thursday, March 29, and we will need several volunteers. If your background check is not up to date, please stop by the office and talk to Valenta Hoffman. The cost is $10.00.

• Every five years, public schools in Kentucky go through an accreditation process which culminates with a site visit by a small group of educators from across the state.  Harmony is hosting this accreditation review March 27-28, 2018.  Part of this review process includes feedback from you.  Please take a few minutes to complete the survey below which will give us information that will help us grow and continue to be the very best that we can be in meeting the educational needs of your children. ELA Workshop:

How do I draft a research report?

• The students will be compiling their notes about their person, and organize them into sections to prepare for their body paragraph developments. Over the week, they will draft a report with the information they’ve learned.

What are non-fiction text structures?

• The students will analyze different pieces of literature and non-fiction to determine what text structure is used in each piece. They will use notes on problem/solution, sequence, compare & contrast, cause & effect, and description to help them best categorize.

Math Workshop:

How do I multiply fractions? How do I relate decimals to fractions?

• This week students will be taking their learning on fractions multiplied by a whole number and applying it to the concept of multiplying two fractions together. Understandings will be strengthened on fraction and decimal relationships.

Science:

What is important for plants to thrive? How do I design a plant that will survive in the Arctic?

• The students will continue to observe their plant projects on the windows of their classroom. They will record their observations, and develop a connection to plants needing mainly air and water to thrive. They will think like an engineer to come up with solutions for growing plants in problem areas (Arctic, shortage of land, too much rain, droughts, pests, etc).

Social Studies:   

What was the Magna Carta? What is the meaning of the Preamble?  

• The students will study the Magna Carta to understand what forms of government helped to inspire the Constitution. They will also move into analyzing our United States Constitution, beginning with the Preamble.
