Fifth Grade Weekly News

03/26/18 – 03/30/18

Pennies for Patients Spirit Week! Monday: Pajama Penny Day Tuesday: Neon Nickels Day Wednesday: Dazzling Dimes Day Thursday: Crazy Quarters Day Friday: Bring in a dollar, and help turn Mrs. Hackmiller into a hot fudge sundae!

Social Studies: I can prepare my business for Biztown. I can share my understanding of  economy vocabulary words.

• Students will complete their advertisements and double check that they are ready to go to Biztown!  
• We will assess on the vocabulary that we have learned in our Biztown lessons.

Math:  I can find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths.   

• Students will be determining the area of rectangles using fractions.

ELA: I can participate in a literature circle. I can determine the main idea of a non-fiction text. I can use my research to write body paragraphs for my opinion piece.

Students are finishing up their literature circle studies. Next, we are reading non-fiction texts and determining the main idea of each text. Students will be responding to comprehension questions about the articles as well.

• Writing: students have chosen a thesis for their opinion piece, and they have found the evidence to support their claims.  This week, we are going to write three body paragraphs.

Science: I can design a model of the 4 spheres of the earth.  I can design an animal that has adaptations that are necessary for surviving in the ocean.

• We will learn about the earth’s systems (hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere and biosphere) and how they interact.  Then, student partnerships will create a model that represents the 4 spheres. 
• After learning about the earth’s systems, we will create an animal that would survive in the ocean.  Students will be expected to explain to the class the adaptations of their animal.

Social Studies: I can prepare my business for Biztown. I can review economy vocabulary words.

• Students will be working within their Biztown businesses to prepare for our field trip. Students are creating advertisements for the newspaper, TV station, website, and radio station that promotes their business. We will be reviewing the vocabulary we have learned throughout this unit and having a quiz on Friday.

 

Math:  I can solve volume word problems. I can find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths.   

• Students will continue their work with volume. Students will be solving real-world problems and take an assessment on Wednesday. Next, students will be determining the area of rectangles using fractions.

 

ELA: I can participate in a literature circle. I can determine the main idea of a non-fiction text. I can research my opinion topic.

• Students are finishing up their literature circle studies. Next, we are reading non-fiction texts and determining the main idea of each text. Students will be responding to comprehension questions about the articles as well.
• Students are in the research portion of their opinion writing piece. They have chosen a topic and are now looking for evidence to support their opinion.

 

Science: I can design an ecosystem. I can explain how energy is transferred.

• Students will be analyzing different food chains and food webs to determine how energy is transferred. Students are creating an ecosystem that follows specific guidelines.

• We have kicked off our Pennies for Patients fundraiser! Your student should have received a sheet and bank for raising money on Friday. The sheet will explain setting up an online account. Here is the link to our classroom page:

ELA Workshop:

I can participate in a literature circle.

• Students will continue to read their novels and work alongside one another to fill their individual roles within a literature circle.

I can list the things that bother me in the world. I can plan for a persuasive piece.

• Students will continue to explore editorials, make a list of things in the world that bother them, and use that to help them select a topic and plan their persuasive pieces.

Math Workshop:

I can multiply to calculate volume. I can make connections between building 3d shapes and calculating the volume of a figure.

• Students will determine the volume of a rectangular prism in multiple ways- some including breaking the shape down into rows, counting blocks inside, and using the standard multiplication formula.

Science:

I can discover where we get our energy.

• The students will understand that the energy released from food was once energy from the sun that was captured in plants in the chemical process that forms plant matter from air and water. Students will be continuing their learning by creating environments and taking the time to elaborate on their knowledge.

Social Studies:   

I can complete business costs. I can advertise for my business.

• The students will continue to prepare for Biztown. Once assigned their jobs, they will gather with their businesses and understand the preparation, financial and otherwise, that is necessary for a business to be founded.

How do I explore opinion pieces?

·         The students will begin to explore editorials and establish a list of things that bother them in the world.

How do I participate in a literature circle?

·         Students will continue to read their novels and work alongside one another to fill their individual roles within their literature group.

 

Math Workshop:

What have I learned? How do I explore volume and find the volume of rectangular prisms?

·         On Tuesday, the students will take an End of Module 4 Test.

·         The students will begin to find volume of shapes by counting unit cubes.

 

Science:

Where do we get our energy?

·         The students will understand that the energy released from food was once energy from the sun that was captured in plants in the chemical process that forms plant matter from air and water. Students will be in groups to make mobiles that track food that they consume back to the sun.

 

Social Studies: 

How do I prepare for BizTown?

·         The students will receive their Junior Achievement Citizen Guides. We will be working on understanding the circular flow of money, free enterprise systems, and financial services.
