Mrs. Tabor’s 2^nd Grade Weekly News

4/25 – 4/29

Dear Families,

            Our Relay for Life fund-raising started last week!  This week we are working as a class to collect dimes.  It takes approximately $100 worth of dimes to fill an empty water bottle, so this is our goal!  Next week we will be collecting all types of money, and the contest will be girls versus boys.  Please help us to raise money for the American Cancer Society!

Reader’s Workshop:

What are the characteristics of trickster tales? 

What is the theme and what is my evidence?

How can I practice reading fluently? 

How can I retell a story orally?

-          This week we will wrap up our ELA Unit 7 by learning about trickster tales.  We will also practice our fluency using reader’s theatre folktale scripts.  Students will then practice retelling stories orally.  First we will plan out what to say using our 5 fingers.  We will practice it and then present it orally to a partner.

Math Workshop:

What things come in groups?

What is multiplication?  How can I represent multiplication with a picture? 

What is an array? 

-          This week we will take our Unit 7 assessment.  Then we will begin Unit 8:  How Do I Count Faster?  In this unit students will be exposed to multiplication.  We will learn that multiplication is repeated addition, or making equal groups.  Students will learn how to draw arrays and use them to solve multiplication problems.    

 

Science:

How can I design a habitat for the Louisville Zoo?

What are wants and needs? 

What are goods and services? 

What wants and needs does my family have? 

What goods and services do my family use? 

What are producers and consumers?  What things are my family consumers of? 

What is supply and demand? 
Why is saving money important?

-          This week students will create a group project to design a new habitat for a zoo.  Then we will move on to Economics.  We will review what we already know about wants, needs, goods, and services.  Then we will learn about producers and how we are consumers.  We will also learn about supply and demand, and discuss why saving money is important. 

 

Writer’s Workshop:

What story did I learn from my family that is significant enough to be retold again and again? 

-          Students brought home an organizer with this assignment last week.  Students will first tell their family story orally across their five fingers.  Then they will write out their story, adding embellishments if they would like.  Last students will explain why this story is significant enough to be retold again and again.    

 

Other Information:

-          Our next MAP testing session will take place on Friday, April 29^th from 9-10 am.  We will take the Math section of the test.  Please make sure your child goes to bed early and eats a healthy breakfast prior to coming to school this morning so they can stay focused during the test.

-          We will be unable to have visitors or parent volunteers in the building from May 16^th – May 25^th due to state testing in grades 3-5. 

-          Last Day of school is Wednesday, June 1^st.

Dear Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather! We had a great first week back to school! We only have 6 weeks left this school year. Let’s work hard and finish the year strong! There are a lot of important dates and reminders below.

MAP – Measurements of Academic Progress: Your child will be participating in MAP testing over the next two weeks. On three different dates the class will take a test in the computer lab over the areas of: math, reading, and language arts. I encourage the students to have a healthy breakfast, get a good night sleep, and try their hardest. Our first test is tomorrow morning. Please talk to your child about the importance of trying their hardest on the upcoming tests. Thanks for your help!

4/19 – Lunch With Someone You Love- Please plan on joining your child for lunch and the book fair this Thursday. Meet your child in the cafeteria at 10:43. You may eat lunch and then head to library for the book fair.

How does the region influence the folktale?

-          We will finish our sixth ELA unit, Hand Me Down Tales from Around the World.  In this unit we learn about the characteristics of a folktale (stories told long ago, setting not specific, sets of three, repeating phrases, good vs. evil, happy ending, and a theme). Students will read a variety of folktales to look for these characteristics.  We will focus on tales from continents each week. In this final week we will read trickster tales from around the world. Trickster tales are folktales that have a main character that uses wit to solve his/her problem. 

Math Workshop:

How do I make up work problems to add and subtract within 1000?

How do I add and subtract within 1,000?

How do I mentally add and subtract 10  - 100?

-          Students will continue practicing solving addition and subtraction problems within 1000. They have learned the following strategies: sketch using base ten, partial sums, and trade first (traditional). They will also use the strategy CUBES to solve word problems. C= circle key numbers, U= underline question, B= box unit, E= eliminate, S= solve and show work

Science:

What habitats do I already have schema for?

How can I compare and contrast a pond habitat to a rainforest habitat?

What are adaptations? How do they help a plant or animal survive in its environment?

-          They will work in groups to research different habitats and present their findings. They will participate in hands on stations to learn about different adaptations.

Writer’s Workshop:

How do I edit/revise my folktale?

How do I publish my folktale?

-          The students will use a rubric to check their rough draft of their folktale. They will then identify what parts need to be improved upon and changed. They will use a strategy called Express Lane Editing to check their folktale and show changes in their work.

Hope that you all had a wonderful spring break! We are into the final countdown until the end of the year. This is the time of year that we all get a little restless, so please try your best to continue to with school routines.

This past week we focused on tales from Central and South America, this coming week we will read tales from Europe. We will focus on identifying certain characteristics in tales based on the region they are from. The students will identify clothing, food, geography, and animals in each folktale.

 

Math Workshop:

How do I solve word problems with 3 or more addends?

How do I solve addition and subtraction problems within 1,000?

-          Students will continue learning strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. We use the strategy CUBES to solve word problems. C= circle key numbers, U= underline the question, B= box key words, E= eliminate unneeded information, S=solve. We will then continue solving addition and subtraction problems up to 1,000 using the strategy partial sums. This strategy has the students separate numbers by place value and then combine.

 

Science:

How do animals help plants reproduce?

How can I build a super creature?

-          They will work in teams as “engineers” to plan and build a super creature. This creature should “model” animals in the real world that have certain attributes that help with plant reproduction.

 

Writer’s Workshop:

How do I write a folktale?

-          The students now have a lot of schema about folktales and their elements. At the start of the week they will plan out a folktale of their own that has all the same elements: told long ago, things that come in 3’s, repeating phrase, good vs evil, happy ending, and theme. Then they will begin to draft out each part of this folktale.
