A note from Mrs. Tabor…

 Reminders

*Each week’s word work lists are available for students to practice on Spelling City. The link is: https://www.spellingcity.com/sherilyntabor/

*In class we have been using the app, Front Row, to practice math concepts.  You can use this app at home.  Your child’s user name is first name, last initial, and the password is r442ji.

*Send in a healthy snack and water bottle every day!

*Now that the weather seems to be indecisive, please check the forecast each day to decide on outerwear.  Again, recess is at 10:30.

*Be sure to sign and return your students planner every day! Don’t forget to record their reading!

What are we learning?

 Reading Workshop

This week we will continue our sixth ELA Unit, “Hand-Me-Down-Tales From Around the World”.  We will continue reading a variety of folktales from different continents and will learn that folktales are stories that have been exaggerated over time and passed down through generations.  Throughout the unit we will look for elements of folktales; a theme, sets of three, repeating phrases, good vs. evil, non-specific setting, and evidence the story was told long ago.  This week we will read African Folktales, including Ashanti and Swahili tales.

Writing Workshop

In Writing we will continue making connections between the folktales we are reading and the country in which the tales originated.  We will also review strategies we learned earlier this year for writing more descriptively.  Students will practice painting a word picture of their setting and characters from their African folktales (writing using detail and description), using show don’t tell, exploding a moment, and using dialogue and thoughtshots. 

Word Study

This week’s word wall words are: 

Form, family, already, nothing, large

Group 1: irregular long vowel:  o_e, oa, _ow

Group 2: Dipthongs: oo (good), oo (soon)

Group 3: syllable juncture (vcv and vccv words)

Group 4: y + inflected endings

 Math

In Math we will continue practicing the money portion of our unit.  We will also review ballpark estimates, and adding/subtracting 10 or 100 from a given number. 

 Science & Social Studies

This week we will continue our Science unit on Forces & Motion. We will continue learning about simple machines, such as wheels and axles, pulleys, and screws.   Related Arts Schedule

A note from Mrs. Tabor…

Hello Spring! I am so glad to see our playground, once again! I hope that you are able to get out with your children in the afternoons.  As we head into our last week before Spring Break, I know that it is difficult to stay focused on learning.  Please help your child by staying as routine as possible, and remember to read and practice math facts nightly.

Please come to our first Leader in Me night this Thursday @ 6:30!  Learn how to help your child learn lifelong skills in leadership!

 Math

In Math we will continue practicing addition and subtraction of larger numbers.  At the beginning of the week we will continue solving word problems.  We will revisit the CUBES strategy for solving word problems and then practice solving many, switching back and forth between addition and subtraction.  During the second part of the week we will begin the money portion of our unit.  We will start by reviewing skip-counting using coins and counting coin combinations.  Students brought home a note earlier this week requesting that they bring in a bag of coins for counting by Monday, March 23rd.

 Science & Social Studies

This week we will continue our next Science unit on Forces & Motion. We will continue learning about simple machines, such as levers.   Mrs. Hammons will also visit our classroom for three lessons on Stranger Danger. Related Arts Schedule
