Group B has PE this week.
Monday, October 31 - Today is Lisa Karr's last day. She has been an amazing aide to the students and teachers. We will miss her so much, but we feel excited for her as she begins a new career!! Congratulations, LISA!!!!!!
Tuesday, November 1 - Mother / Daughter Book Club - 6 - 7pm
Saturday, November 5 - Harmony Harvest - 2 - 5pm

What will we be learning?
Math - How do we read and write decimals is different forms? For example: 0.076
     Word Form: Zero and seventy-six thousandths
     Expanded Form: .07 + .006 or (7 x 0.01) + (6 x 0.001) or (7 x 1/100) + (6 x 1/1000)
     The digit 7 is in the hundredths place and its value is .07

Science - How do we investigate the scientific method?
     Oil spill experiment

Social Studies - How did the environment influence the Native American cultural regions?
     Students will work in groups to draw a mural and create a model of a Native American home.
     They will need supplies for their shelter on Wednesday. No need to be purchased anything!!! The students will bring natural resources from their backyards.

ELA - How do I use my notes to write an essay? How do I interpret Trickster Tales?
     Students will be expected to quote accurately from text to write their paper and answer questions about Native American tales.

ELA Workshop:

Students will demonstrate quoting accurately from an informational text about Native American tribes in North America.  Students will research a specific tribe and determine how the environment influenced that culture.  We will use this information to create an essay.

 Math Workshop:

Division

We are going to continue developing strategies to solve division problems that contain single and double digit divisors.  We will also develop skills to interpret remainders.  Math test is scheduled for Thursday. 

 Science:

Scientific Method

We will take a hands-on-approach and analyze a simulated oil spill challenge.  This will give us awareness on the human impact of the environment and how to be a part of the solution.

 Social Studies:

We will be discovering the seven Native American cultural regions throughout the United States.  We will create a mural that depicts the important cultural elements pertaining to each tribe.  In addition, we will build a model of each tribe’s shelter.

ELA Workshop: 

·         Figurative Language

o   Students will apply their knowledge of figurative language to create their own poems on fictional characters

o   Students will analyze poems for figurative language

·         Forming opinions

o   We will begin a new unit in ELA on Thursday, Clues to a Culture

o   Students will read an article about the “Kennewick Man” and use evidence from the article to form an opinion on what should be done with the body (returned to the Native American tribe for a proper burial or continued to be studied by scientist)  More information on the Kennewick Man can be found here: http://www.burkemuseum.org/blog/kennewick-man-ancient-one

Math Workshop: 

·         Division

o   Students will be learning strategies for dividing whole numbers

§  Single digit divisors and two-digit divisors

Science:

·         Engineering Process

o   Students will be working in groups and apply the engineering process to build, and meet the necessary criteria for various structures. 

§  For example, a rocking chair that is 20 cm tall, able to rock, and with a seat that can 50 grams.

Social Studies:   

o   Native Americans

§  Students will analyze evidence from various archeological sites to help them choose a migration theory that they agree with (Land Bridge Theory, Pacific Coastal Theory, or Atlantic Coastal Theory)

§  Students will take an in-depth look at how the Inuit tribe adapted to their environment
