Announcements:  Thanks for your participation in our fundraiser, The Husky Hustle.  At last count, our class raised $528.00, and the volunteers are still counting!  I’ll post some pictures from the event on the “Husky Hustle” page.

ELA Workshop: 

How do I write a bio poem and short report? 

·                     Students have been researching an inventor and learning how to take notes. They will be using strong word choice to write a poem about their person. They will then write a short report about their inventor.  

What is an idiom?  

·                   Students will be exposed to several different idioms and explore their literal and actual meanings.  

 

Math Workshop: 

How do I write verbal expressions? What are the order of operations?  

·                     Students will continue to apply expression and the order of operations to real world problems. They will take a test on Wednesday, September 28, over Unit 1 . 

 

Leader in Me: 

How do I organize my leadership notebook? 

·                     Students are establishing mission statements and setting personal and academic goals.   

 

Social Studies:   

How do I apply the 5 themes of geography to survival? 

·                    Students will use location, place, movement and human / environmental interactions to survive a pretend Zombie Apocalypse.

ELA Workshop:

How do I conduct a short research project?

-          Students will be researching famous _____ for a research project. We will be identifying credible sources, learning how to cite sources, and become proficient at note-taking. Students will be using their research to write a biography poem (Bio-Poem) the following week.

What is figurative language?

-          This week we will be studying different forms of figurative language. Students will be working to identify similes, metaphors, alliterations, onomatopoeia, and many more. We will then try writing our own examples of figurative language.

Math Workshop:

How do I write verbal expressions? What are the order of operations?

-          This week, we will be looking at additional grouping symbols (brackets and braces) when solving a problem with multiple operations. Students will be writing verbal expressions, for example, the product of seven and three less nine. This would be written as: 7 X 3 – 9.

Leader in Me:

How do I set up my Leadership Notebook? How do I develop my Wildly Important Goal?

-          This week we setting up our leadership notebooks. These notebooks will be a snapshot of our school year together. Students will complete sections, “All About Me” and “My Celebrations”. Also, students will set their academic and personal goals and the notebook will be a place for students to track their learning in each subject area. Your student will share their leadership notebook during student led conferences this fall.

Social Studies:  What are the regions of the U.S.?

-          This week, students will be researching a region of the U.S. Each student will be working with a small group to complete their research. Students will begin research at home, collaborate with their classmates at school, and assemble their presentation while at school. On Friday, students will dress like a “wacky tourist” from their region for their presentations. Look for regions homework to be sent home this week!

Other Information:

-          We have a couple of different research projects that students will be working on at home and at school. Be on the look-out for homework!

-          If your student is sick, make sure to send in a note the following school day.

ELA Workshop:

How do I use story elements to determine the theme?

-          We will be reading different genres (drama, poetry, and short stories) and determining how story elements can help us better understand the theme of the piece.

How do I complete an on-demand writing piece? How do I use the traits of writing?

-          The students will complete a 30 minute on-demand writing piece. This will serve as a base-line so they can develop goals for writing. They will also be looking at examples of text that model the six traits of writing: ideas, organization, sentence fluency, word choice, voice, and conventions.

Math Workshop:

How do I write verbal expressions? What are the order of operations?

-          This week we will be writing verbal expressions, for example, the product of seven and three less nine. This would be written as: 7 x 3 – 9.  Additionally, we will be learning the order in which math problems are completed. (PEMDAS - parenthesis, exponents, multiplication/division, and addition/subtraction. You may remember, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.

What are the 7 habits of highly effective people?

-          Habit 5:  Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood – I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings without interrupting. I see things from another viewpoint before voicing my ideas.

-          Habit 6:  Synergize – Working together is betterJ I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I can get along with people who are different than me.

-          Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw – Balance feels best – I eat right, exercise and get enough sleep. I learn in lots of ways and places. I spend time with family / friends and find meaningful ways to help people.

Social Studies: 

How do I classify physical features? What are climate zones?

-          The students will classify major physical features of the United States and study climate zones using latitude as a climate indicator. The test on Friday will cover vocabulary, map skills, hemispheres, latitude, longitude, geography terms, and major physical features of the USA.
