A note from Mrs. Tabor…

Thank you to everyone who has donated supplies that the students will use to make our Spirit Pencils.  The children are getting very excited to begin production!  If you offered to donate supplies and have not sent them in yet, we are trying to collect everything the week we return from spring break!

 Reminders

*Each week’s word work lists are available for students to practice on Spelling City. The link is: https://www.spellingcity.com/sherilyntabor/

*In class we have been using the app, Front Row, to practice math concepts.  You can use this app at home.  Your child’s user name is first name, last initial, and the password is r442ji.

*Send in a healthy snack and water bottle every day!

*Now that the weather seems to be indecisive, please check the forecast each day to decide on outerwear.  Again, recess is at 10:30.

*Be sure to sign and return your students planner every day! Don’t forget to record their reading!

What are we learning?

 Reading Workshop

This week we will conclude our sixth ELA Unit, Hand-Me-Down-Tales From Around the World.  We will continue reading a variety of folktales from different continents and will learn that folktales are stories that have been exaggerated over time and passed down through generations.  Throughout the unit we will look for elements of folktales; a theme, sets of three, repeating phrases, good vs. evil, non-specific setting, and evidence the story was told long ago.  This week we will read European folktales. 

Writing Workshop

In Writing we will continue making connections between the folktales we are reading and the country in which the tales originated.  Students will start a new folktale piece called a trickster tale.  We have shared several trickster tales throughout this unit in which a main character tries to trick another character (usually animals) in some way.  Students will begin and finish this piece this week.  

Word Study

This week’s word wall words are: 

Side, country, yesterday, whole, half

Group 1: irregular long vowel:  /u/: ew and ue words

Group 2: Dipthongs: au and aw words

Group 3: syllable juncture (vcv and vccv words)

Group 4: hard and soft c and g

 Math

In Math we will begin our next unit, which is an extension of our last unit.  This week we will focus on the strategies that help us to add multiple two digit and three digit numbers.  Students will discuss which strategy works best for them (base 10, number line, partial sums, tallies) and practice solving a variety of problems.   

 Science & Social Studies

This week we will be focusing on economics to prepare for our Relay for Life Spirit Pencils project.  We will talk about wants and needs, goods and services, producers and consumers, supply and demand, and saving and spending.
