A note from Mrs. Tabor…

Thank you to all who came to Parent Orientation! We had a great turnout, which really pleased

me.  If you weren’t able to come, or if you need a reminder of any of the information that we covered, please take a look at the “Mrs. Tabor’s Handbook” page on this blog.  All of the information is there.

Volunteers:  Thank you to all of the new volunteers! I am so excited to get started.  I will e-mail volunteers with the schedule this week.  Reading volunteers will start in two weeks.  I still need a Room Parent.  It’s very easy, as you are only responsible for two parties, and many have signed up to help with parties.

Reminders

*Students who are new to Oldham County schools have a lunch number. Ask your child if they know it.

*Send in a healthy snack and water bottle every day!

*Be sure to sign and record reading in your student’s planner every day!

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

This week we will begin discussing Reading Strategies.  Your child will review strategies that help with fluency, or “Fix-up Strategies.” Some of the strategies are rereading, using pictures, or chunking words.  We will introduce “Metacognition” as a way to make connections while we read as a means to comprehension.  We will use or schema, or background knowledge to help us make connections.  We will also discuss the difference of reading the written words, and our thoughts that we have while we read.

Writing Workshop

How does punctuation help my writing?  We will spend the week reviewing the use of upper case letters, commas, and ending punctuation.  We will also add to our list of people, places and “I wonders” to write about in our Writing Journals.

Word Study

Words for this week are:

Love, high, done, men, wish

We will introduce our word work journal.

Math

How do I use non-standard and standard tools to measure length?

What is the difference between a yard, a foot, an inch and a centimeter?

How do I choose the right measuring tool for the job?

Social Studies

What are the seven continents?  We will discuss the unique characteristics (landmarks, animals, landforms, and climate) of the continents.
