A note from Mrs. Tabor…

            Poetry Slam!!  Students should be practicing their Shel Silverstein poems at home 1-2 times each day.  We will have our class Poetry Slam on Thursday, March 5^th, after the field trip.  On this day students are welcome and encouraged to bring in props or a costume to use while reciting their poem.      

             Report cards are coming home the second week of March.  If you feel that you’d like a conference to discuss your child’s progress, I have posted times available on volunteerspot.com. The link to my sign up is http://vols.pt/KEzLxA.

*Send in a healthy snack and water bottle every day!

*Now that the weather is turning colder, please make sure your child comes to school with a coat, hat, and gloves.  There have been many days recently where students have come to school and not been prepared for outside recess.  Our recess is at 10:00 or 10:30am, and we will go outside unless it is below 32 degrees (with the wind chill factor).

*Be sure to sign and return your students planner every day! Don’t forget to record their reading!

What are we learning?

 Reading Workshop

This week we will begin our sixth ELA Unit, Hand-Me-Down-Tales From Around the World.  We will start the week by celebrating Dr. Seuss’s book on Monday.  Students are encouraged to bring in their favorite Seuss book to share Monday.  Next we will learn about poet Robert Louis Stevenson.  We will look at several of his poems and discuss how he used his imagination to travel to unknown places.  For the remainder of the week we will learn about folktales.  We will learn that folktales are stories that have been exaggerated over time and passed down through generations.  Throughout the unit we will examine a variety of folktales from different continents as well as read different versions of the same story. 

Writing Workshop

In Writing we will use beautiful pictures and our imaginations to create fictional narrative stories.  Students will choose from a variety of pictures and then plan out their story pretending the place in their picture is the setting for the story. 

Word Study

This week’s word wall words are: 

Outside, box, girl, near, stand

Long vowel group: review CVVC patterns (ai, oa, ee, ea)

r-influenced vowel patterns group: ar, or, er

suffix group: plural endings, add –es or -s

word endings: -en, -on, -ain, -in

 Math

In Math we will begin subtraction of larger numbers.  Like we did with Addition, we will start with using base 10 blocks to model our thinking.  Students will use the base ten blocks to have a visual representation of how to trade. 

 Social Studies

In Social Studies we will learn about Cesar Chavez and Muhammad Ali. Both of these people were influential during the civil rights era.  We will discuss why each person was important in creating equality for all.  At the end of the week we will visit the Ali Center.  Students will also bring in their Civil Rights Vest Projects to share with the class.
