A note from Mrs. Tabor…

 

We are back...finally! I hope everyone had a great break and that you had time to rest and relax with your family and friends!  As we get back into school just a reminder that we do go outside for recess in the winter (32 F  with the wind chill factor, and dry); please send in gloves and hats on days that are going to be cold! 

 

Please also remember that we ask you send in a small, healthy snack each day with your water bottle.  Please be sure that the snack is just one item, and one serving, easy to open and clean up.  Some students are bringing in a lot of food and this is supposed to be something small they can eat in about 5 minutes.  The additional lunch boxes are also taking up a lot of space in the cubbies and causing them to have a hard time packing their back packs.  Please also be sure your water bottle has a pull top to help avoid spills. 

 

Don’t forget to read and practice your sight words nightly as we start off 2014!

What are we learning?

Reading Workshop

We are continuing our unit on Story Elements.  We will review our reading workshop expectations and talk about “good fit” books that the students can read.  We will also be asking and answering questions about unknown words in text. 

 

Writing Workshop

This week students will get a chance to write small moment stories about their break.  We will review using correct punctuation, capitalization, finger spaces and best guess spelling.  We will complete a Family Journal entry at the end of the week. 

 

Word Study

This week, we will explore the short i word families: -ip, -ig, -ill.  Ask your child about the chants for these chunks.  We will also learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: this, were, what.  Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

 

Math

This week we will start a new unit “Should I put these together? Take this apart?”  Students will review our addition strategies using fingers, objects, and drawings.  Students will also review how to use the number line and counting on strategy. 

 

Social Studies

We will review the school and classroom expectations this week as well as solving problems and building independence.  We will also have two guidance lessons with Ms. Hammons regarding good touch vs. bad touch.  There will be an information sheet from her coming home with more details.
